Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) - effective January 1, 2017:

We need a VFD from your veterinarian to provide you with feed that includes medically important antibiotics.

A VFD can only be issued from a licensed veterinarian, based on a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and include all information, listed below, before a producer may use feeds containing antibiotics that are medically important (including complete feeds, medicated supplements and crumbles) to human health.

  • Veterinarian contact information
  • Animal information (e.g. location where feed will be used, species, production class, approximate number of animals, etc.)
  • Medication information (e.g. medication prescribed, indication for use, withdrawal period, duration of use and expiration date, etc.)

3 Important things to remember:

  1. A veterinarian can write a VFD that is effective for up to 6 months.
  2. Veterinarians, feed suppliers, and producers must keep a copy of each VFD for 2 years.
  3. Extra-label use of medicated feed additives has not been and will not be allowed.
